When the Genius Loci Dialogues with the World

Exhibiting together young artists and internationally renowned masters

The II Biennale "City of Lecce" was inaugurated yesterday, Saturday, May 5, with the awarding of scholarships to young artists and the “Laurea Honoris Causa” to the sculptor Antonio Santoro. It offers an international panorama through the installation in the halls of Castello Carlo V of 143 works.

The exhibition showcases both emerging and established artists from Italy and across Europe, including Spain, Holland, Switzerland, Slovenia, and America.

Among the artists, the Venezuelan Delfín Dinorah searches for a surreal perspective, living between Rome and New York. Her work combines installations of digital art, photography, collage, and video art, with Dalí as her inspiration.

The Spanish artist Margalida Adrover, an eclectic artist, engages in a confrontation with contemporary languages.

Dutch sculptor Johannes Genemans, who spent thirty years shaping the style of Italian footwear.

Lorenzo Oliani in a poetic-expressive approach, while his sister Lorenz has founded the editorial board of the “Lorenzo and Lorenz Journalists” in 2004, a newspaper that ended up in Parliament.

Pierluigi de Lutti, invited to the MoMA in New York, is part of the Artist Viewing Program and was selected for a solo exhibition by the critic Carlo Balljana, described as the sculptor of the "wind."

Dafne Cazalet, who moved to Salento a few years ago, narrates gestures related to the feminine universe. Slovenian informal artist Iztok Smajs Muni is also featured.

Among the Salento artists, with noteworthy résumés, are the painters, installation artists, and sculptors Musarò, Santoro, Pagliara, Rollo, Donadeo, Stomeo, Quarta, each with unique personalities, known and appreciated.

LECCE

The II Biennale is Coming

Valuing and Promoting Art in the Beating Heart of Lecce
Between Breath, Sentiment, and Talent

The Stomeo Art Gallery of Martano has scheduled the 2012 edition of the II Biennale Internazionale di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea “Città di Lecce”, which will take place at Castello Carlo V in Lecce from May 2 to May 27, 2012. The inauguration will be held on Saturday, May 5. This initiative is in collaboration with L’Officina delle Parole of Lecce, with active sponsorship from the Municipality of Lecce and the patronage of major local authorities: the Puglia Region, the T. Schipa Conservatory of Lecce, the Province of Lecce, the University of Salento, and the Equal Opportunity Department of the Province of Lecce.

Many private entities are collaborating, including Corte Licastro, Ristoratori di Lecce, Gruppo Foresta, Punto Sud-Est, and Sistemi Energia Group. The Lecce Provincial Councilor for Equal Opportunities supports the initiative.

The II Biennale is a major cultural event dedicated to showcasing talent and promoting new artistic trends through various languages: painting, sculpture, installations, photography, and other visual arts, both locally and internationally. The halls of Castello Carlo V, rich in historical and architectural value, will serve as a showcase for the works of artists coming from many parts of the world.

At the II Biennale “Città di Lecce”, established and renowned artists will participate. A section is dedicated to young emerging artists who have shown a significant commitment to art, and they will receive scholarships.

The artists were selected through a process led by a scientific committee made up of cultural experts, chaired by the art critic Pompea Vergaro. A book on art will be published by L’Officina delle Parole Editions, containing the artists’ works and motivations for their selection.

Each artist will receive a commemorative plaque and the prestigious award “Laurea Honoris Causa” from the LUISS University of Rome. The selected artists will stand out for their artistic materials and subjects.

Additionally, some of the most prestigious international galleries will be present to adopt and promote the artists, as explained by the gallery owner Gianna Stomeo.

Throughout May, the II Biennale has organized meetings inside the halls of Castello Carlo V. During the opening evening, in collaboration with students and teachers from the T. Schipa Conservatory of Lecce, the orchestra Swing Big Band, directed by Luigi Bubbico, will perform.

  • Saturday, May 12: Performance by I Saxaccordion, featuring Fulvio Palese (sax) and Alessandro Gazza (accordion).

  • Saturday, May 19: Public auction held by Gruppo Foresta di Lecce.
